In honour of V. Day today, I am sharing these sweet but ever so practical heart shaped bowls. A group of three, they nest inside each other for helpful storage (can't get enough of helpful storage solutions) and are handmade by JDWolfe Pottery for USD $30. That's only ten bucks a bowl. Food safe, but I think they'd make great jewellery or trinket holders:

Onto a more tween themed Valentine project now....These witty tattoos can be made by following the tutorial at The Longthread. Who new you could order tattoo paper to print your children's designs onto? But of course. A lovely little project to do with the kidlets.

I'm dubious as to whether we'll ever get to the beach again with the relentless rain we've been having in Sydney.

Should the sun come out any time soon (fingers tightly crossed), I'll be taking one of these ultra stylish, turkish beach towels with me. Lightweight making them easy to carry and quick to dry, there'll be no more baskets of heavy, wet towels sitting in the laundry.

You're Crackers!

It's been a long time between drinks - well actually is hasn't at all, which may be partly to blame for my little blog being neglected of late - but here I am to wish you, dear reader all "The Compliments of the Season!"

While not blogging, I have however been keeping myself occupied by "settling in" to our new home and co-ordinating and painting (so much painting) a garage conversion. Here are some before and afters.
If I can't brag here, where can I? After all, this is hand-made on a grand scale.

Special mention to Uncle Sammy who drove over to do the hard core building stuff....

Although not quite finished (more floor trims and more painting...will the painting ever end??), we've begun to move in:

With rather a more Christmassy theme, I made these Bon Bons for Christmas Day with the help (??!) of my children. Having stockpiled the loo rolls for a couple of months, we whipped up a whole heap of these for some handmade love on the 25th.

Warm Welcome

Having just moved into our new home, we have been welcomed by neighbours on all sides.
In a gorgeous and heartfelt gesture, Kate from no. 54 baked some chocolate slice and hand-crafted a card thread with grosgrain ribbon, tied around hand picked flowers from her garden (I am totally stealing this idea).

Not to be outdone, Michelle, Mark and their girls at no. 56 presented us with this plate (half eaten by the time I took the photo!!) of handmade cookies and lovely orchid flowers:

No longer an urban myth, this stuff really does happen in some streets!

Clearly, this is a move that was meant to be.

Change of Address

We are about to move again - yes that is the 6th house in 5 years - and hopefully the last time for a LONG while.
As a result of all that is required when buying, renting, moving, selling, packing and stressing i've been on a slight blogging hiatus. (being away for an awesome family ski holiday hasn't helped my blogging either, but I'll be blaming the move!)
I've seen a bit of stuff that I like online and a lot that I don't.
There is nothing like the prospect of a new pad to get the juices flowing again though, and here a few finds/ideas that I've bookmarked recently with the new abode and spaces in mind.....

I have been perusing all the usual places for some pendant lights. This brass version is a DIY project (probably something I won't have time for, but anyhoo) and is via Design Sponge

The Elegant Thrifter has posted about a novel use for those old water bottles that you will no longer be using when and if the weather ever warms up:

I am aiming to have a little outdoor-sunroom-area on a terrace in the sun off the new kitchen. I want it colourful, relaxed and a wee bit retro. I saw these macrame plant hangers and reckon they'll get a gig for sure. From AUD$9 by The Scarf Tree

Big Cheer for Veneer

Not so long ago veneer was regarded as a plastic looking and very dated product, used essentially for cupboards and occasional furniture.

Well, like most things, veneer has come of age and is looking all grown up and rather stylish.

These beautiful lampshades - with handspun glazed pottery bases - are made using a maple veneer and finished with a grossgrain ribbon by Ronda Ruby Ceramics in Chicago. So warm and classy. USD$250 for the pair.

While we're on veneer, I recently aquired a nest of veneer tables from my Nanna and had the talented folk at Retro Modern update them with some laminate and some new age veneer! Here's a before & after:

These sustainable and ethical finds from I Ran The Wrong Way might make you smile....do they look familiar??

Yes, that's right. Formally a bottle of Toilet Duck - the loo cleaner - these bottles were saved from landfill and made into colourful sculptures. AUD$48.

While we're on upcycling...I am loving these brightly coloured watertight vessels (could be a cup, a vase, a tea light holder) that have been made by design duo Supercyclers, and also available at I Ran the Wrong Way using old plastic bags. From AUD$32.

They even have a tutorial if you fancy having a go at making some yourself.

What are you up to in July? It is currently cold, dark and smack bang in the middle of winter here in OZ. I have begun the countdown to spring and longer days and was disheartened to be reminded there is still two months to go.
Christmas in July celebrations are a marvelous excuse to celebrate the cold. A big roast dinner, mulled wine, roaring fire & good friends. Presents optional (but certainly preferred!).

You know what they say: "busy bee, bare blog" (or something like that; thanks Hannah!).

I've just done a quick tally and have deduced that of the 127 days since we moved in, we have either been away or had guests staying for 51 of them! That's my excuse for the blog posting hiatus....socialising is too much fun and way more preferable to sitting at the computer.

Anyway, I'm back now (or our next guests arrive on Wednesday!).

Sticky Stuff

Have you noticed that the fine folk selling their wares at quirky gift shops and markets recently have taken to using coloured or printed sticky tape on their brown paper bags and wrappings?

I admit to currently having a blue and white spotted version on my own tape dispenser, and I love the ability this tape has to add charm to a package.

The fine folk at Belle & Boo have now got a couple of fun rolls of tape to choose from, as well as a plethora of dreamy cards, prints and cushions. Based in London, they have captured the hoo haa that is the Royal Wedding on tape.
Their "umbrella tape" depicts perfectly (well apart from the rabbit) me & my family in wet ol' Sydney town this week:

Cost Effective Cushions

There is something about purchasing cushions and cushion covers that actually never takes place for me. The only ones I like are unique and and as a result generally rather exy. I find one I love and then have an internal mental debate with myself, convinced that I could just make one and save the coin. Which never happens.

Well, that was before I discovered de dee etsy shop. Although Good Morning America is already all over this shop, it hasn't had an impact on the prices. Cute yet stylish, some of these cushions are quite intricate. They are sold with stuffing for under AUD$35. There is currently a 5+ week wait for deliveries....might be time to put the prices up??

If I was to put a nominal hourly rate on my time, I would have clocked up $150 while still using the scissors. The end product wouldn't be nearly as polished as these cushions either - I assure you!

Love Mae

My friend Christina kindly took me along to life instyle this weekend, a trade event and tresure trove of gloriously new products and incredibly talented folk.

To say we were both feeling insecure and inept wandering around is an understatement. I mean, how do they all do it??

An early find was Mae. Based in Northern NSW, Mae designs fabric wall stickers (decals) using soft colours and sweet patterns, complimenting delightful subjects & themes. A new range includes photo 'dots' and wrapping paper.

Mae's decals can be used again and again. Scrunched up, smoothed out and re-applied. And the company has a green ethos to boot!

I'm going to get my hands on some of the photo dots to display the myriad of photos I currently have in boxes as well as the message tiles - perfect for hidden messages to my family! Both are selling for AUD$65 and coming soon. Keep an eye on the online shop.

Frock up in Feb!

I saw a girl wearing the strapless dress below by Lil Designs and immediately wanted one. Luckily for me she was working at the Lil Designs market stall in Manly and therefore selling them!

I have been covetting a similar style of dress of late, particularly the strapless variety, given the recent hot and sweaty weather we've been experiencing. Something that is simple yet elegant, in a lightweight fabric and a design that allows my blessed armpits to be free. We have recently moved into a house that is sans air conditioning, so home duties and 100% humidty do not a pretty picture paint.

I spoke to the designer Lil, and she designs all her own signature prints and has the fabrics made in Japan. The collection is handmade in Australia.

The Tamiko print is by far by fave and she has three different numbers you can purchase from her website in the Tamiko print if you can't get to Sydney's northern beaches. Here they are below at AUD$180, AUD $110 and AUD$150 respectively.

A week long heatwave that broke two seperate weather records. Don't tell me that doesn't justify a new frock!

Tales of a Tee Pee

My son was lucky enough to receive a tee-pee for his 3rd birthday, and since it was hand-made, I had to share the joy!

Robyn is the clever Mummy who, through her business Banana J Creations makes not only Tee Pees, but all sorts of products to help stimulate the imagination.

I have been somewhat focused for the past 10 weeks on selling the house and relocating my family interstate- hopefully the last move for a long while - but here I am again now with a handmade card to share with you.

Are you familiar with Iris Folding? I met a lady once who made cards using the technique; which in a nutshell uses folded strips of paper placed in a spiral pattern until the centre of the design in the end product resembles and iris or eye of a camera.

In honour of the public holiday on Wednesday for AUSTRALIA DAY, here is a card made using Iris Folidng. For AUD$5 it is from Polly Papers based in Tasmania. Can you make out the folds in the pic below?

It is only the 7th of November, but I saw decorations of the festive variety in my local shopping centre this week.

Celebrating Motherhood

A clever and inspiring stylist, Amelia McFarlane pulled together a collaboration of clever folk to submit a piece of art that "Celebrates Motherhood" in order to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Foundation and her own mother's current cancer treatment. These pieces make up the exhibition that is currently running in Sydney at the ESD Gallery. Although the opening night invite below could be considered passe.... you still have a couple more weeks to view the exhibition as it is running until 5th November.

This information is my segway into today's blog post.
One of the generous and talented contributors to Amelia's exhibition is Rachel Castle. She offered something similar to this embroidered piece below for sale and had it not already appeared with the red circle sticker next to it on my arrival, I would have snapped it up. Luckily for me (and anyone else taken by it), we can still have this one for AUD$120 by clicking here.

I've either been walking around with blinkers on or had my head in the sand to have not stumbled across the talented Rachel Castle (and her Mum!) until now. Not only is she a magazine contributor and stylist, she has her own gorgeous range of bedlinen and many, many colourful, intricate and mouth watering artworks.
I'm ordering some bedlinen post haste. The dots or the flowers- AUD$145. What do you think?

I have very fond - although vague - memories of our annual Advent Calendar. Mum used to make it and I remember long pieces of green and red ribbon, 24 Minties (or was it Fantales??) attached and some sort of poem. Cast your mind back 30 odd years (if you can), and try and recall a popular form of wall art. Start with a velvet covered back board and add some luminous string - in several hues!!

Can you do it?

Here's something to jog your memory ($2 on eBay):

We certainly had something similar adorning our walls in the family home. A cheap and cheerful craft back in the 70's, todays version by Tamara Mayes is still cheap and cheerful, but the velvet is replaced with white paint. And what a difference white paint makes!!

You can purchase the instructions to make a noughties version of String Art like the one above by visitng SOHI Magazine. $5, some nails, yarn, white paint and a board; and you're away.

A 70's fad worth a revival I think. Sure beats the waterbed, lava lamp and mood rings.

Porcelain Pieces

Having just been away for the weekend (to a beach-house in winter...thank you Sydney), I realised that I could really do with a stylish overnight bag.

As it turned out the whole family shared a big (actually massive) generic black suitcase, and wore about 60% of what was packed. When. Will. I. Learn?

Using something especially made for the weekend escape would not only curtail the "overpacking", but it would add a certain "je ne sais quoi" to the process of unloading the car into a beautiful holiday house in the company of friends.

A day away from Polling Day

I've been incommunicado for a whole week now. That's seven whole days. I've been having conniptions. The number one on my "favourite gadgets list" (my laptop) gave up the proverbial ghost. AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH.

With a day to go until Australia's Federal Election the laptop was returned to me and so I decided to do this little online quiz to determine which lucky party will get my vote tomorrow. Ikat Attack

Ikat - it's the fabric de rigueur right now. The word “ikat” means “to bind.” It is a very ancient way of creating designs in fabric by resist-dyeing the threads before the fabric is woven.

I'm home again now and it's time to report back. My research whilst away uncovered Singapore as being famous for....wait for it.....Tiger Balm!!

I'm sure there are lots of ultra creative people in SIN, but my allocated time for perusing was superseeded by pampering and relaxing on Bin Tan at the Banyan Tree Resort. Deluxe! A thousand thank-yous to my host and cool cousin Andi for the getaway!

Printed in Singpore however is an awesome magazine called Habitus - for and about the design hunters. (Available in Aust in good bookshops). Whilst devouring the past 4 x editions, I came across the Amazing Shape Maker by Miller Goodman.

These award winning, hand printed, wooden blocks come in a pack of 25 blocks and combine to make a gazillion different creatures and pictures. UK29.95

I bought this necklace from Community Projects Worldwide recently. Made using Australian Wool for the felt balls, felt is now on my radar big time. I keep stumbling across it - even when I'm not looking for it. There is a word for this phenomena isn't there?

I've been bookmarking my "felt-finds" for a while now. The challenge is deciding which clever felt creations to share....here's a taste:

Cozy Cottage Creations made this felted earth ball by referring to satellite pictures as a guide for accuracy in the position and shading of the continents and swirls of clouds in the ocean. Ingenious. Made to order for only USD$40:

I have accumulated a number of Nanna's old doilies. These intricately crocheted surface protectors, are now being used by crafty folk in a number of decorative and repurposed ways:

Fringe Bar Markets

I recently met the lovely Naomi Levi at the Fringe Bar Markets (held every Saturday if you are in Sydney). I am not spending much time in bars these days, but I felt young again venturing inside the doors of The Fringe to peruse the various wares on offer. Dark and poky, with a resident DJ pumping out the tunes, there was even the opportunity to pull up a bar stool and order a cockail - and that was at 11am! A great stop for vintage fashion, new designers as well as loads of up to the minute jewellery items.

Naomi designs and makes lovely leather accessories: bags, wallets, belts. As you know, anything with a bit of hardware is so hot right now....and Naomi has this current fashion trend all sewn up.

Rain, Rain, Go Away....

Just when you think Sydney can't take anymore rain, the heavens serve up some flash flooding and tornados!!

It goes without saying that when confined to the indoors - the internet is mandatory. I need the WWW on the sunniest of days, so when my modem decided to call it a day this (wet) week, I was beside myself.

The only thing left to do then, was shop. Ho hum. (!!!)

Equipped with wet weather gear, I ventured off to Magnolia Square at the Royal Randwick Racecourse - where it's safe to say the track was very heavy (and the marquee was leaking), and re-discovered Betty and Lola, who I had bought from 5 years ago at The Mosman Markets. Here are a couple of Catriona's clever creations. She also does a mean pom-pom trimmed kaftan and towelling hoodie. To. Die. For. Colours and sizes can be made to order.

As the rain continues to fall outside, one look at this delightfully cheery clutch using vintage fabric from Denmark - was enough to put the spring back in my soggy step. USD $88 from Oktak.

I've just spent some time trawling through an Antique Centre in Brisbane with dear friends, and I saw one of the old 'original' bus roll posters. The newer versions are selling in all the homewares stores and you can even personalise a tea towel with your choice of towns or suburbs.

We have temporarily relocated to Sydney. And you wouldn't believe it when I tell you that our new abode in Paddington is right next door to a boutique called Mr Rose - or would you?? Mr Rose claims dedication to creativity, design, personal service and freedom of self-expression. All pretty good stuff to offer I reckon.

The designer women's clothing at Mr Rose is somewhat beyond my budget....however I couldn't pass up the opportunity to share the fluffy, tissue-paper pom-poms (presumably hand-made) in their current window display:

I have actually made some of these pom-poms for a birthday party myself by following this tutorial and urge you to give it a try. Very effective for all manner of occassions. And cheap. A pack of tissue paper, some florist wire and about 15mins of your time.

I love nothing more than putting on a Vinyl LP to listen to. I think it's the subtle crackle of the needle going round. The novelty soon wears off however, when I have to turn the record over after 5 tracks!?

My Dad is the handiest of Handymen and if you're in Adelaide or surrounds and have ANY odd jobs - he is your man. You know, the kind of things the tradies can't be bothered with. The fiddly tasks that you just can't seem to find anyone interested in tackling. He has made cupboard drawers for tallboys with drawers missing, laid decking for irregular shaped spaces, handcrafted fly screens for windows, and all manner of general house-hold repairs.

He also fits nicely into the find...found..forage theme as he makes things. By hand. Wooden things mainly. And since today is Earth Day....why not consider something hand-crafted rather than mass produced?

I'm not familiar with the "Pop Up Shop" title, but I'm intrigued and very much looking forward to my introduction next week.

Magnolia Square (Melbourne's 'pop up' shopping event) is coming to Adelaide next week/end (April 22-24), and while I'm currently coordinating a move interstate, I am going to try very hard to factor in some uninterupted "M.S" time.

Remember that study nook I posted about last month?
And the ugly lamp I bought off eBay for $7? Well, the study nook is still a work in progress......

but take a look at the lamp now....a lick or two of white paint and a new shade:

I bought this vibrant lampshade at Eumundi Markets while in QLD a couple of weeks ago. I just couldn't leave it there. It is hand crafted by Seven Dandelions who have some amazing pendant shades. This one was AUD $110 and almost caused a ruckus with the overhead baggage compartment when flying home! Seven Dandelions will ship anywhere and will custom make shades for you too. Surely you'd WANT to study in this spot?!

I did have good intentions of making my own cover for the lamp by following the steps in this post by Down and Out Chic, but it never happened. Here is the before and after and she ensures us it is basic DIY....

Like any female....I have a thing for shoes.

I have to admit, when deciding to blog about all things 'craft', I really didn't consider footwear. But it seems the hand-made revolution did not stop at the ankles.

Now you could pay up to $180 at a lovely boutique on Edgecliff Road, Woollahra (guilty!) for something very similar to these made by hand in Miami by Tuto. For USD $50 these come in all sorts of colours, are all leather with a rubber sole:

For something a little more "Green"...these canvas shoes are 100% Vegan! Salvaged cork and organic bamboo...these really cut the mustard if you don't believe in the leather or fur thing.USD $125 by Smartfish:
